Even stable legacy systems can quietly slow down your business, from rising maintenance costs to delayed releases and missed integrations. Many companies don’t notice the early signs until it’s too late and modernization becomes a rescue mission instead of a planned step.
Here’s a quick checklist to help you spot the warning signs early.
Choose what applies to your .NET system:
You’re still using legacy .NET Framework (4.6.1 and below).
Risk: Many of the versions are already out of support or close to it. That means no security patches, no critical updates, and growing compatibility issues with modern libraries. Furthermore, outdated frameworks lack support for TLS 1.3, modern auth (OAuth2/OpenID Connect), and the latest security patches.
This exposes your system to security breaches, data leaks, and regulatory penalties. Running on unsupported versions can mean failing mandatory compliance checks (GDPR, PCI DSS, HIPAA), leading not only to fines but also to loss of customer trust and legal risks.
Software that runs on the versions from .NET Core 1.0 to .NET 7 is also at risk, as those versions have already reached the end of support.
“.NET Framework 4.5.2, 4.6, and 4.6.1 retired on April 26, 2022. These specific releases were previously signed using Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1) certificates. This algorithm is no longer secure.”
