Overview

Delphi is a high-level programming language based on Object Pascal. The history of Delphi software began in 1995. Currently, the technology has over 25 versions. We will focus on Delphi 5, released in 1999. Let’s discover its functions and features to trace its popularity together.

Delphi 5 Overview

Borland released the fifth Delphi version in August 1999. This was a significant advancement over older versions like Delphi 3 and Delphi 4. It brought many new features and functionalities for developers.

For example, Delphi 5 was the first to support various desktop layouts and frames. It also included tools for translating application interfaces into other languages. Internet technologies also underwent improvements. The new version introduced XML support. Additionally, Borland improved application debugging mechanisms.

Delphi 5 aimed to replace the complex and often slow BDE data access mechanisms. They were part of previous versions and hindered their performance. The company implemented alternative mechanisms to improve effectiveness. The new Delphi 5 supported ADO technology (data objects built as ActiveX objects).

Second, Borland developed a series of lightweight data access components. These components didn’t need the BDE, creating a “lightweight” client environment.

The version became very successful, even though the following versions attracted more attention. For example, Delphi 6 added support for cross-platform development. This allowed developers to use the same code to build applications for Windows and for Linux. Three years later, Borland launched one of its most popular Delphi versions, Delphi 7.

Now Is the Best Time to Update Your Legacy Delphi Version

Despite its popularity, Delphi 5 is now more than twenty years old. During this period, the technology landscape has undergone many changes. New tools and trends in application development have emerged. And requirements have changed too. If you are still using legacy versions, it’s time to consider upgrading.

The latest Delphi versions bring several benefits. They include enhanced IDE features and usability, improved debugging, and faster app delivery. Modern language updates such as generics and anonymous methods make managing code easier. Updated VCL and FMX libraries boost cross-platform app development.

These are a few of the improvements the newest versions offer. But achieving all this can be challenging without expert help.
