Overview

Borland Delphi 6 is a popular development environment. Borland Software Corporation released the sixth version of Delphi in 2001. For a long time, this version remained very popular.

Why was Delphi 6 so important? What opportunities did it offer developers? Where does it stand today, more than 20 years after its release? Let’s find answers to these questions in our article.

A Closer Look at Delphi 6

Delphi 6 is the successor of Delphi 5, launched in 1999. The release day of Delphi 6 is May 21, 2001. The new software came in three versions: Delphi 6 Enterprise, Delphi 6 Professional, and Delphi 6 Personal.

The version appeared with significant improvements. Borland Delphi 6 introduced support for Web Services. It also brought new features and updates in areas such as the IDE, Internet, XML, Compiler, and COM/ActiveX. In addition, Delphi 6 introduced a new universal data access mechanism called dbExpress.

A key feature of Delphi 6 was its support for cross-platform development. The package included the Borland Component Library for Cross-Platform (CLX). The technology was designed for use on both Windows and Linux. This allowed developers to create apps for different platforms using the same code.

Additionally, Delphi 6 supported DBExpress, added new modules, classes, and components. Besides technical changes, the creators updated its design. Several components adopted the style of Windows 2000.

Delphi 6 was followed by Delphi 7. This version gained much more attention and popularity than Delphi 6. Moreover, version 7 remains one of the most widely-used Delphi’s versions today. Despite this fact, the release of Delphi 6 was a major milestone in the product’s development.

Updating Delphi 6?

The innovations in Delphi 6 reflected modern trends in the industry at that time. They include support for Web services, SOAP, XML data exchange, full CORBA support, and multi-platform support.

But more than 20 years have passed since its release. During this time, information technologies have changed significantly. If you are still using Delphi 5, 6, 7, or earlier releases, you’re missing many new advancements the newest versions bring.
